ENVIROMENTAL ALLIANCE CO-ORDINATOR CRITICIZES CLIMATE CHANGE PLAN Gord Bacon, AM800 News The co-ordinator for the Citizens Environmental Alliance says Ontario's Climate Change Plan will do nothing to improve the environment. Derek Coronado presented Windsor's Climate Plan Report Card Thursday night at the Windsor-Essex Environment Committee Meeting Windsor fared well compared to Hamilton, Oakville, Ottawa, and Toronto, but still performed poorly overall. Coronado says part of the blame can be placed on the PC's cancellation of Cap and Trade, a funding source Coronado says isn't being adequately replaced in the province's new plan. He tells AM800 News it simply won't be enough to ward off what last month's U.N. report calls a pending climate disaster by 2040. "That target has been around for many years, it's actually been around since the Harper government. It was unambitious then, and it's even more unambitious now, because science has been telling us that we're not doing anywhere near enough that's necessary to prevent catastrophic climate change," he says. According to Coronado, Ontario can and should do better. In this province, which is one of the wealthiest jurisdictions on the planet ... with a legacy of pollution for decades. It's really unethical and immoral for us not to be doing more," says Coronado. "Apparently the provincial government is satisfied with that." The Paris Agreement aims to keep the increase in the global average temperature to below 2 degrees Celsius. Targets were set to reduce emissions by 30% by 2030 Coronado says that goal will be impossible based on what's being presented around the world. "We're supposed to be well below 2C throughout this Century based on pre-industrial levels. Nobody's being ambitious enough and Ontario had the opportunity to be ambitious and chose not to be," he says. The Progressive Conservative government's plan will see the province spend $400-million over four years on a fund called the Ontario Carbon Trust, which is designed to encourage companies to invest in initiatives that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Australia's Emissions Reduction Fund uses a similar structure that the NDP opposition claims actually allowed emissions to rise. © Copyright (c) AM800 News |
